Vitra and Parsons The New School for Design will present domestic vignettes designed by Parson students that showcase Vitra furniture, lighting and accessories in new and innovative ways.
The installations will be presented at the Vitra Showroom in New York’s Meatpacking District, designed by Lindy Roy in 2002.

Brooklyn-based industrial designer Klaus Rosburg, founder and mastermind of influential design group SONIC Design, opens the doors to his studio. Visitors will gain unique access to the creative process and making of his diverse designs, ranging from high-tech lighting and products to eco-experimental furniture and packaging. Nominated for the National Design Award in 2007 Klaus has received most prestigious design awards worldwide, most notably the Industrial Design Excellence Award, ID and CES Innovation Award.

Istanbul-based product designer, Alper Böler, presents new furniture designs at the Union Square Mavi flagship. Each piece is unexpectedly and elegantly convertible, including a couch called Kale (‘fort’ in Turkish), a sophisticated object for adults that doubles as a playground for children: Using cushions and bolsters, kids can build a house, car or fort and parents won’t ask them to hide their toys away after use. Tepsi (‘tray’) is a slot-based, wall-mounted shelving system, the rearrangement of which creates endless graphical combinations. Additional new work will also be on display throughout the street-level store and in the basement exhibition space.

Studio-X, a Soho extension of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (www.arch.columbia.edu/studiox) hosts InDisposed that highlights the twin dichotomies defining contemporary design today: sustainability versus wastefulness and preciousness versus mass production. Visionary thinkers are invited to envision an eco-friendly design that addresses notions of disposability, waste, and/or wastefulness. The pieces created are made from environmentally sustainable materials, portable and conceivably able to be mass-produced. At the end of the show, all pieces will be ceremoniously recycled, upcycled, composted, or otherwise responsibly disposed of. The roster of 20 participants encompasses both local and foreign talent. NYC stars Paul Loebach, Jeff Miller, Carlos Salgado/Scrapile, RedStr Collective, Atema Architecture, and Design Glut will be joined by designers from as far away as Oslo (So Takahashi of Heads, Inc.) and Berlin (Adrian Kondratowicz).

The Gallery R’Pure, always looking to promote poety and ‘storytelling’ design, rarity and savoir faire, has given carte blance to French design Jean Marc Gady. “French Cancan”, sculptural lighting in a unique scenography created by the designer himself. The exhibit will include Gady’s “gourmet” plate as well as the A.M.O vase and will run until May 19th. Selected R’Pure’s design will be on view as well.

“Save” project is based on the collaboration between the Italian artist Lello Esposito and Viromare Design, a multidisciplinary design studio based in Brooklyn. “SAVE” reinterprets the piggybank as a come back to elementary rituals, as an answer to the sense of instability so common in these recent times. The piggybank is an introduction for children to the concept of saving, intended as a sagacious way to administrate their resources and life. In the development of the project the piggybank is interpreted as a reliquary, an amulet against bad luck, a talisman to look at for fortune and hope for the future. The series of piggybanks “SAVE” are produced in limited editions.

Whenever American designers need a nut, a bolt, a widget, a piece of steel, even - haven forbid - a diaphragm pilot-operated solenoid valve, they turn to one source: McMaster-Carr, an industrial parts supplier with a J. Peyerman - style catalog offering more than 480, 000 useful things. The temporary exhibition “ McMasterpieces”, curate by Monica Khemsurov, invites a dozen of New York’s most exciting designers to craft unique objects entirely from McMaster-Carr parts, emphasizing the value of these raw materials in the creation process. The show will debut chandeliers, coffee and night tables, shelving units, and more by Lindsey Adelman, Ross Menuez, Constantin and Laurene Boym, Jason Miller, Leon Ransmeier, Paul Loebach, Sebastian E., Todd Bracher, Kristin Victoria Barron, Rich Brilliant Willing, Le-Bom, and Commonwealth.
